Physical DescriptionA blond-colored wood carving of a fish titled “The Carp Jumps The Dragon Gate” with a detached presentation plaque.Historical NoteAccording to legend, the Dragon’s Gate is on the top of a waterfall on a mountain. Many carp swim upstream, but few are able to make the leap over the waterfall. If a carp makes the jump, it is transformed into a dragon. The image of a jumping carp is symbol of courage, perseverance, and success.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
