Physical DescriptionA Howitzer 105 MM M102 cartridge shell. The shell is inscribed "Presented to President and Mrs. Reagan from the troops of the 82nd Airborne Division Charlotte 500 7 Oct 84 Fired by the troops of the 1st BN (ABN) 320th FA First Artillery in Grenada." The shell is stored inside of a wooden box with brass hinges (.01b). On top of the lid of the box are three badges, with the insignia of the L 82nd Airborne Division combat service identification badge (a red square with a blue circle with white AA, lettered AIRBORNE curved across top). The C U.S. Army Master Parachutist Badge (silver badge of open parachute with a pair of stylized wings curving inward, topped with a star and wreath). And the R 320th Field Artillery Regiment unit insignia (red shield with a yellow palmetto tree with a blue Lorraine cross, motto: VOLENS ET POTENS).Historical Note105mm M102 Howitzer cartridge shell from Operation Urgent Fury. It was fired by troops of the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment in Grenada. On October 25, 1983 the 82nd landed at Point Salinas Airport after it was secured by an airborne assault. The cartridge is inscribed "Presented to President and Mrs. Reagan from the troops of the 82nd Airborne Division Charlotte 500 7 Oct 84 Fired by the troops of the 1st BN (ABN) 320th FA First Artillery in Grenada." It has three badges, from left, with the insignia of the 82nd Airborne Division combat service identification badge (a red square with a blue circle with white AA, lettered AIRBORNE curved across top), U.S. Army Master Parachutist Badge (silver badge of open parachute with a pair of stylized wings curving inward, topped with a star and wreath), and 320th Field Artillery Regiment unit insignia (red shield with a yellow palmetto tree with a blue Lorraine cross, motto: VOLENS ET POTENS). It came in a red velvet lined wooden box. They were presented during a trip to Charlotte, NC and Fort Bragg on October 8, 1984.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
