Physical DescriptionA reproduction of an original invitation (.a) to the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886. To the left is a black engraving of the Statue of Liberty on its pedestal. In front are two shields, one with the stars and stripes of America and one with the tricolor of France. On top of them is a Phrygian cap, and behind them are olive branches. The image has text stating, "TIFFANY & CO." At the top of the invitation is a raised golf emblem of crossed flags and a wreath. The invitation states, "You are invited to be present on the occasion of the inauguration by the President of the United States, of the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, on Bedloe's Island, New York Harbor, on Thursday, October 28th 1886. On behalf of The American Committee: William M. Evarts, Chairman. Richard Butler, Secretary. Henry F. Spaulding, Treasurer. Joseph W. Drexel, Parke Godwin, James W. Pinchot, V. Mumford Moore, Frederic A. Potts. John M. Schofield, Major General U. S. Army Commanding Division of the Atlantic." The verso is blank. Also included with the invitation is a plain paper insert (.b) and a plain white envelope (c.).

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
