Physical DescriptionA bronze oval shaped belt buckle commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Pony Express. On the front of the felt buckle is a small image of a man riding a horse along with the text "Pony EXPRESS April 3rd 1860-1985 125" along with 13 stars. Stamped into the back of the belt buckle is text stating, "SOLID BRONZE LIMITED EDITION NO 022 OF 1250 THE BUCKLE SOURCE WICHITA, KS."Historical NoteThe first Pony Express ride began in St. Joseph, MO on April 3, 1860 and ended in Sacramento, CA, on April 14, 1860. The Pony Express, a system of relay riders rode across eight states and delivered mail between Missouri to California in an average time of only 10 days. Before the telegraph, the Pony Express was the most direct and practical means of east-west communications.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
