Physical DescriptionA Quimbaya earthenware sculpture is shaped like a flat abstract seated figure with a gold nose ring, raising one arm. The eyes and mouth are merely slits. The holes on the forehead and chest may have held feathers or another decoration.Historical NoteThe Quimbaya people lived near the Cauca River in what is now western central Colombia. This piece was apparently discovered in Montenegro, Quindío, Colombia and dates between 600-1600 AD. It was given to President Reagan when Colombia's President Betancur came to the White House for a working visit on April 4, 1985.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
