Physical DescriptionA lacquerware hinged box depicting a troika scene on the lid, with three galloping horses, one white, one brown, and one red, pulling an open cart with two seated Russian women and their driver. The driver wears a reddish-orange tunic, green coat, and black hat. One woman is wearing a white blouse, yellow bodice, blue skirt, and orange kerchief. The other woman is wearing a white blouse, reddish pink bodice and skirt, and green kerchief. They are riding down a road with bushes and fences along the lane. The box is signed by the artist on the lid in the bottom right corner. The sides and bottom are plain black, and the interior is red lacquer.
Historical NotePresident Ronald Reagan met with Soviet Politburo member Vladmir Shcherbytsky in the Oval Office on March 7, 1985. The box was given after the meeting.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
