Physical DescriptionThis is a set of five sterling silver commemorative coins about the United Nations. The coins are dated between 1977 and 1983. .01 On the obverse is a relief of a woman in classical Greek dress holding an olive branch in her right hand and a shield with the UN emblem (an olive wreath around an image of a globe focused on the North Pole) in her left. It is lettered "SECURITY COUNCIL" at the top. Reverse: Lettered "UNITED NATIONS" in various languages in the outer rim. In the center is the UN emblem with "1977" below. .02 On the obverse is a relief of a row of five men in military uniform and berets, waist up, with a UN flag behind them. It lettered "PEACE-KEEPING OPERATIONS" around the bottom. Reverse: Lettered "UNITED NATIONS" in various languages in the outer rim. In the center is the UN emblem with "1980" below. .03 On the obverse is a relief of a group of flags arranged in a circle. It is lettered "UNITED NATIONS FLAG SERIES" around the bottom. Reverse: Lettered "UNITED NATIONS" in various languages in the outer rim. In the center is the UN emblem with "1983" below. .04 On the obverse is a relief of two arms releasing a dove with an olive branch in its mouth. There are olive branches on either side. It is lettered "和平 * PAZ * МИР * PEACE * PAIX" around the top. On the reverse: A relief of two arms holding the UN emblem with "1982" on the right. Lettered "UNITED NATIONS" in various languages around the edge. .05 Obverse: A relief of "35" with a dove with curved wings and an olive branch in its mouth forming the 3 and a globe inset in the 5. Text stating "UNITED NATIONS * 35TH ANNIVERSARY * 1945-1980" around the edges. The reverse has text stating "UNITED NATIONS" in various languages on the outer rim. In the center is the UN emblem with "1980" below.

Historical NoteOn September 23, 1984, the day before he gave an address to the 39th Session of the UN, President Ronald Reagan spoke at a reception for the Heads of Delegations to the 39th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, NY at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, gave President Reagan the coin set during a luncheon held at the Waldorf Astoria.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
