Historical NoteReplica silver coin from the Bar Kochba revolt of the Jews against the Romans, 132-135 AD. It depicts a two-handled vessel and is inscribed in Paleo-Hebrew "First Year of the Redemption of Israel." Simon bar Kokhba led the Jews in the Roman province of Judea against the Roman Empire in what was the third major uprising. While they held portions of Judea, they minted their own coins by striking over existing coins, and outlines of the original design can still be seen. The shadowbox was given to Mrs. Reagan when the gifter attended the Committee on the Arts for the Handicapped Special Arts Festival on the South Grounds of the White House on May 24, 1984.
