Physical DescriptionA simulated bronze sculpture of a man riding a mid-buck horse on a wooden base. On the wooden base is an engraved metal plaque stating, “To The American In The White House Who Has Straddled Courage And Rides It Hard: An Inspiration To Us All. National Multiple Sclerosis Society And The Patients It Serves. May 1981.”Historical NotePresident Reagan met with the 1981 National Multiple Sclerosis society Mother of the Year, Anita Wagner, and Father of the Year, Jan Robert Smith, in the Oval Office on June 3, 1981. Sylvia Lawry, the executive director of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Frank Sinatra presented President Reagan with a sculpture. Sinatra was the chair of their fundraising drive that year. Sinatra also gave President Reagan a baseball. The Smith family presented him with a football jersey. The Wagner family presented him with the Key to the City of their hometown, Mentor, OH, which was given to President Reagan from the Mayor of Mentor, Joseph P. Tiefenbach.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
