Physical DescriptionThis is a ceramic replica of the birthplace of the Republican Party, the Ripon schoolhouse in Wisconsin. The sculpture is a small house with plastic flowers in the front windows and a brick fireplace. The house has light-colored siding, a yellow roof, and a brown front door.
Historical NoteHandcrafted clay replica of the Little White Schoolhouse, known as the birthplace of the Republican Party, in Ripon, WI. It was made for President Reagan’s 70th birthday.
An informal meeting took place in Ripon March 1, 1854 before the first official meeting of the Republican Party July 6, 1854, in Jackson, MI. People who were against the Kansas-Nebraska Act and against the spread of slavery in the territories, including former members of the Free Soil and Whig parties, met and formed the Republican Party.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
