Physical DescriptionA copper reposse depicting the abstract likeness of the space shuttle Challenger crew Christa Mcauliffe, Francis R. Scobee, Ellison S. Onizuka, Ronald E. McNair, Michael J. Smith, Gregory Jarvis and Judith A. Resnik in blue orbs surrounding a larger blue orb with a gold cross superimposed over it. The artwork is in an aluminum frame with beige matting under plexiglass. The verso is backed in green with a wire hanger, and a sticker with information about the artist in Japanese.Historical NoteThe plaque was presented to Mike Mansfield, the United States Ambassador to Japan (1977-1988), Mutsuo Kimura, the President of the House of Councillors of the National Diet of Japan, during the Tokyo Economic Summit in 1986.Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
