Physical DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Ronald Reagan and Barney Oldfield presenting a winning trophy to Emory Collins at a night race in Des Moines, IA, in 1936. Reagan is wearing a light suit, patterned tie, white shirt, glasses, and an armband on his left arm. Oldfield is wearing a white suit, white shirt, and tie with wide diagonal stripes and has a cigar in his mouth. They are presenting a tall metal engraved trophy cup with a lid to Collins, who is sitting in the racecar. He is wearing a white shirt and has dirt on his face around where he had worn goggles. There is a crowd of teenage boys behind them. Ronald Reagan and Barney Oldfield have their names written over their photos in purple ink. The photo is inscribed “To Martin / Emory Collins” across the front of the car.Historical NoteMartin Emory “Spunk” Collins (1904-1982) was a sprint car driver who raced in the 1930s through 1951. Barney Oldfield (1878-1946) was an early automotive racer, who started in bicycle racing and switched to cars in 1902.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
