Physical DescriptionAn engraved stone with a wooden chest for storage. The green-grey serpentine stone is engraved on the front with "Life Guard On Duty" and on the bottom with a long inscription about the stone's history, "CALIFORNIAS OWN SERPENTINE VARIETY VERDE ANTIQUE FROM NEAR VICTORVILLE (?) MATERIAL FOR BUILDING OR ART - AND - RONALD REAGAN - DURABLE ARTIST AND AT THE BOARD MIDWEST & WEST, TO EAST TO WORK PREPARED BY BILL JVON A.D.D. LETTERING BY MARVIN WHITON PRESENTED TO THE PRESIDENT BY HON. DEL CLAWSON DESIGN ENID KING, 1981." The chest is made of light-colored wood with a brass handle and locking hinge. The stone was obtained and prepared by W. K. Judd, Jr., designed by Enid King, and lettered by Marvin Wilson. The chest was made by Jack Bienick and engraved on the inside corner of the lid.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
