Physical DescriptionThis white ceramic plate has a red transferware design and is mounted inside a circular plastic frame. The plate depicts events and landmarks of Santa Barbara, CA, including the Santa Barbara Fiesta, Rancheros Visitadores, Lobero Theatre, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Mission Santa Barbara, and the County Court House. The back has a timeline of Santa Barbara and is marked "Santa Barbara, California, 'Sun-kissed, Ocean-washed, Mountain-girded, Island-guarded' 1542 - Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the discoverer and the first European who is known to have visited Santa Barbara. 1602 - Sebastian Viscaino entered the Harbor on December 3rd, the Vigil of St. Barbara's Day, and named it Santa Barbara. 1782 - Santa Barbara Presidio was founded on April 21st, and Father Junipero Serra dedicated the spot by raising the Cross and celebrating Mass. 1846 - Lt. Theodore Talbot raised the Stars and Stripes over the city on December 27th. First Edition Designed by Vernon Kilns U.S.A."Historical NoteIt was given during a trip to California February 19, 1981.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
