Physical DescriptionA silver toned bronze medallion commemorating the 40th anniversary of the liberation of France. The images depicted on the obverse of the medallion are bas relief profiles of Charles De Gaulle, Winston Churchill, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt with text stating "QUARANTIEME ANNIVERSAIRE DU DEBARQUEMENT, 1944-1984." Depicted on the verso of the medallion is a representative image of D-day of a group of soldiers running off a Higgins boat onto the beaches of Normandy with the text "6 JUIN 1944, JOUR, J, UTAH, PTE DU HOC, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, SWORD." On the right side of the medallion is the artist's signature, "R. TSCHVDIN."Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
