Physical DescriptionA V-Nickel or Liberty Head nickel. On the obverse is a Head of Liberty wearing a diadem, with 13 stars around her head and lettered "1911". On the reverse is the Roman numeral V, for 5, which indicates the denomination, surrounded by a wreath with text stating, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA E PLURIBUS UNUM V ·CENTS·."Historical NoteThe V-Nickel or Liberty Head nickel was in circulation from 1883-1912, when it was replaced by the Buffalo nickel.
The coin, from the year of Ronald Reagan's birth, was a gift to President Reagan for his birthday in 1981.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
