Physical DescriptionA metal Matancero Cross with one side engraved with images of the crucifixion and the other side with an image of the Virgin Mary.Historical NoteThe Matancero cross, which was recovered by divers from the wreck of the Spanish ship Nuestra Señora de los Milagros, also known as El Matanceros, in 1959. The merchant ship was lost off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula in 1741. One side shows the crucifixion and the other side the Virgin Mary.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
