Physical DescriptionA grey-toned model ship of the USS Theodore Roosevelt is enclosed in blue and clear plastic. Engraved in gold on the top is “Authentication of the Keel CVN 71, Newport News Shipbuilding, October 31, 1981, President Ronald W. Reagan.”
Historical NoteThe USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) was the fourth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the US Navy. She was ordered on September 30, 1980, laid down on October 31, 1981, launched October 27, 1984, and commissioned on October 25, 1986. The carrier, whose call sign is "Rough Rider," is still in service, and based in San Diego.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
