Physical DescriptionThis is a reproduction of a Mayan bust of K’inich Janaab Pakal I. The bust is made of earthenware and attaches to a wooden bust. It shows a male face wearing a headdress that curls above and over the front of the face.
Historical NoteThe sculpture was given when President Ronald Reagan was in Cancún, Mexico for the North-South Summit, 22 Nations Summit on October 21-24, 1981.
K’inich Janaab Pakal I (603-683) was a Maya king who ruled the city-state of Palenque from 615-683 AD. Pakal is known for the jade mask found on his remains in his sarcophagus.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
