Physical DescriptionA pair of octagonal shaped gold toned magenta enameled cuff links designed as replicas of the 1856 one-cent magenta British Guiana postage stamp. The cuff links were made by “Richley.”Historical NoteThe British Guiana 1c magenta is the world's rarest stamp. A limited issue stamp produced in British Guiana in 1856 to deliver local newspapers, only one stamp is known to still exist. That particular specimen was used, and the corners were cut off giving it its distinctive octagonal shape, which is reflected in the cufflinks. It was most recently sold at auction for $8.3 million to rare stamp dealership Stanley Gibbons, who have displayed it in their London shop.
The cuff links were given for President Ronald Reagan’s birthday in 1981. The stamp cuff links had not manufactured for over twenty years by the time this set was given to President Reagan.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
