Also included with the buckle is a paper "Certificate of Registration" from Siskiyou Buckle CO. Inc (.01b) and a gray pull string cloth bag (.01c).
Historical NoteThe buckle was given when gifter Martha Borgaard of the Wyoming Division of the American Cancer Society attended the ceremony to present the Young American Medals for Bravery and Service, held in the East Room, on January 16, 1986. 19-year-old Janelle Lynn Peery of Cheyenne, WY was one of the recipients, who was honored for service during her battle with bone cancer, which required her right leg to be amputated. While in treatment, she began to make teddy bears to give to other children in the hospital with a note that said "A little hand for you to hold onto when you get scared," and eventually counseled hundreds of cancer patients and amputees. When meeting her, President Reagan said, "Janelle, you've given us all the gift of hope... And by the way, Janelle, I read an interview in which you said: 'It'll be nice to meet the President. I think it will be cool.' [Laughter] Well, it's been cool to meet you, too. [Laughter]"
