Physical DescriptionA plowshare blade.Historical NoteThis rusted metal plowshare, the part of the plow that cuts into the ground, was sent to President Reagan to encourage him beat swords into plowshares. This is a reference to the Book of Isaiah, which says, "And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Isaiah 2:4)

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
