Physical DescriptionA hardcover reproduction of “Skarðsbók” published by Sverrir Kristinsson, Reykjavik, in 1981 (.03a) with a matching slipcover (.03b). The cover of the book is made out of French cloth with vellum binding done in the 14th-century manner. The inside page is inscribed Icelandic by Steingrimur and Edda Hermannsson, the Prime Minister of Iceland. Also included inside the book is a pamphlet about the original manuscript (.03c).Historical NoteThe Prime Minister of Iceland, Steingrimur Hermannsson, gave this reproduction of a 14th century Icelandic legal manuscript, the Skarðsbók, to mark the historic meeting of President Reagan and General Secretary Gorbachev in Reykjavik in 1986. The book, which was published by Sverrir Kristinsson in Reykjavik in 1981, is covered in French cloth with vellum binding, and is done in the 14th century manner. The frontpiece is inscribed to commemorate the Reykjavik conference.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
