The front of the obelisk is etched with text stating “Princess Grace Foundation-U.S.A., 1986 Awards Gala, Dallas, Texas, With Appreciation To Mrs. Ronald Reagan” below the profile image of Princess Grace.Historical NoteOn October 15, 1986 First Lady Nancy Reagan joined Prince Rainier III, Princess Carlokine and Princess Stephanie of Monaco at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery to unveil a bronze sculpture of the head of Princess Grace of Monaco by Dutch sculptor Kees Verkade, which was given to the museum by the royal family. At the ceremony, Mrs. Reagan said, "Her friendship will stay with me always. I'll long remember our days in Hollywood together. And as the years went by, we still remained close although our lives had taken us far apart, in some ways -- in some ways not." Mrs. Reagan was an honorary trustee of the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, and the organization gave her this award follwing the unveiling. They held the annual Princess Grace Foundation-USA awards in Dallas, TX a few days later.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
