Physical DescriptionA silver Hanukkah menorah, hanukiah, (a) with scrollwork branches, jar-shaped candle cups, a bird finial, and four-footed base. The shamash holder (b) is detachable and there is a small silver pitcher (c). This is an oil based menorah. The small silver pitcher would be used to fill each pitcher with oil accompanied by a wick. Each candle holder is covered in roses. The candelabras’s central stem is covered in intricate bouquets of flowers. The base is wreathed with leaves
Historical NoteOn December 22, 1986, the American Friends of Lubavitch came to the White House prior to the lighting of the National Menorah. Reagan said of the meeting, “I truly valued accepting the menorah from you on the occasion of the observance of Hanukkah, and the support of the Orthodox Jewish community means more than I can say.”

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
