Physical DescriptionAn embroidered picture of the shadow of George Washington standing behind a Boy Scout on a hill, pointing into the distance with his right hand and holding a sword in his left. The Scout is in profile, wearing his uniform with his hand in his left hand and a backpack on his back. There is a brass plaque etched “A SCOUT IS LOYAL #5” at the lower center. The picture is in a brown wood frame.Historical NoteThe image is based on the 1932 artwork A Scout is Loyal by Norman Rockwell. He did a number of designs featuring the Boy Scouts. Rockwell was hired by the Boy Scouts of America to produce images for The Boy Scout’s Hike Book, and created other scout-themed artwork for Boys’ Life magazine and The Saturday Evening Post.
President Ronald Reagan was given this picture, along with the Annual Report and membership card, during a meeting in the Oval Office on February 9, 1987. Boy Scout president Charles Pigott, Cub Scout David Thomasson, and Boy Scout Bennie Jones were part of the presentation. For many years, the embroidery was on display in President Reagan's private office at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
