They are in a replica riverboat and dressed in 18th-century colonial uniforms, holding an American flag with thirteen stars. There is a narrow white border on three sides and a wide border across the bottom. The photo is in a black wood frame. On the back, the photo is stamped “WALT LANKENAU” on the upper left. The back is inscribed “The Day The FLAG Crossed The Delaware December 8, 1987. Commemorating the Secret Meeting [Masonic symbol] between Washington and Daniel Bray To arrange for Additional Boats [signatures] John R. Haelig Harry Kels Swan Herbert Patullo” in the bottom left in blue ink.
Historical NoteCaptain Daniel Bray (1751-1819) served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and directed the Hunterdon County Militia to collect enough boats to be able to cross the Delaware River on the night of December 25/26, 1776. The Continentals defeated the Hessian mercenaries that morning in Battle of Trenton, and almost two-thirds of the Hessians were taken prisoner. Joseph Fulford Folsom wrote the poem "The Ballad of Daniel Bray" in 1903, which ends with the famous lines: "Of Daniel Bray it shall be said: 'He brought the boats to Washington.'"
