Physical DescriptionA silver commemorative coin encased in a plastic holder for the Space Shuttle Challenger. The coin feateres the image of the earth with the shuttle flying around it surrounded by text stating "IN MEMORY OF FLIGHT OF THE CHALLENGER January 28, 1986, 001, Francis Scobee Commander, Michael Smith Co-Pilot, Ron McNair Astronaut, Ellison Onizuka Space Engineer, Gregory Jarvis Payload Specialist, Judith Resnik Astronaut, Christa McAuliffe School Teacher, IN GOD WE TRUST" on the obverse. The verso of the coin features a sunburst design with the American flag at its center, surrounded by the text "CHALLENGE OF THE FUTURE THE STARS 1 OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER." Coin (a) is in a hinged wooden display box with blue felt lining (b).

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
