Physical DescriptionA clear glass sculpture of the Statue of Liberty by Verreries Brosse.Historical NoteOn February 6, 1986, his birthday, President Reagan met in the Roosevelt Room with a French delegation, where he was presented with the crystal replica of the Statue of Liberty. The replica was presented by Emmanuel de Margerie, French Ambassador to the United States. Accompanying the Ambassador were François de Laboulaye, former Ambassador to the United States; French actress Catherine Deneuve; and Jean-Louis Beffa, President of Saint-Gobain, the company that manufactured the crystal statue. Ambassador de Margerie explained to President Reagan how Saint-Gobain had been in business for over 300 years, and had made all of the mirrors for the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Ambassador de Laboulaye's great-grandfather Édouard de Laboulaye was known as the "Father of the Statue of Liberty," as he had come up with the idea to give the monument to the United States.
The President said he was looking forward to attending the 4th of July ceremonies in New York commemorating the 100th anniversary of the gift of the Statue of Liberty to the United States and invited the President of France to attend the ceremonies.
