Physical DescriptionA three-dimensional plaque in the shape of the cutout coat of arms of the Solomon Islands. The arms have a shield supported by a crocodile and a shark. The top portion of the shield has three birds on a blue field, and the main portion has a bow and arrow and two turtles on a yellow field, with crossed spears in a green X. The motto, "TO LEAD IS TO SERVE," is displayed under it in black on a yellow and red ribbon. Surmounted over the shield is a helmet with decorations in blue and white, crowned by a stylized sun. The back is unpainted.Historical NoteThe plaque was presented by Richard Harper, Minister of Provincial Island Affairs of The Solomon Islands, to Robert P. Nimmo, the Administrator of Veterans Affairs, at a ceremony for the 40th anniversary of the invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi held in August 1982.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
