Physical DescriptionThe James Cardinal Gibbons Medal (a). The obverse of the medal features a profile portrait of Cardinal Gibbons with two keys, three stars, and a shield with a cross, book, and crescent. The reverse of the medal features raised letters with the name and date etched in, “AWARDED TO NANCY REAGAN FOR DISTINGUISHED & MERITORIOUS SERVICES BY THE *ALUMNI ASSOCIATION* OF THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSIT OF AMERICA 1988.” A black leather presentation box (b) lined in black velvet, with a hinged lid lined in black satin, lettered “Limon’s Gems & Jewels BETHESDA, MARYLAND” in the fold. Gold button closure.

Historical NoteOn October 11, 1986 First Lady Nancy Reagan received Catholic University of America's James Cardinal Gibbons Medal at a ceremony at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. The medal was established in 1947 to honor persons who have rendered distinguished and meritorious service to the Roman Catholic Church, the United States of America, or The Catholic University of America. It is named after James Gibbons (1834-1921), the second American cardinal in the Catholic Church and founder of the university.
During the Reagan administration the medal was displayed in the First Lady's Projects Office.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
