Physical DescriptionA cream-colored silk scarf commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition. Four engraved printed images are arranged in a diamond pattern in the center. At the top is printed an eagle holding arrows, olive branches, and lightning bolts in its claws inside an oval. Above the eagle are four stars and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in a ribbon. In the center is the eagle from the Great Seal, lettered “LEWIS AND CLARK CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION PORTLAND, OREGON JUNE 1, 1905” below the eagle. Below that, on either side, are portraits of President Theodore Roosevelt, head and shoulders, wearing a suit, waistcoat, and tie, and spectacles. The image is inside an oval with a ridge inner ring and an olive wreath around the bottom. At the bottom center is “ROOSEVELT” on a ribbon. In the bottom center of the scarf are portraits of Lewis and Clark, head and shoulders, each in an oval with a beaded inner rim, and “LEWIS” and “CLARK,” respectively, at the bottom center. In between the portraits is a lighted torch. There are oak leaves, a ledge with details below the portraits, and a circle with the eagle from the Great Seal in the center. “LEWIS” and “1805” are in ribbons to the left, and “1905” and “CLARK” are in ribbons to the right. Below are “CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION PORTLAND, OREGON JUNE 1, 1905” and a flourish.Historical NoteThe Lewis and Clark Expedition explored the territory of the Louisiana Purchase and on to the Pacific Coast from May 14, 1804 to September 23, 1806. They went past what is now Portland, OR near the Willamette and Columbia Rivers in 1805. The Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition was held in Portland June 1, 1905 to October 14, 1905. Over 1.6 million visitors attended.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
