Physical DescriptionA model of one of Christopher Columbus' three sailing ships made of silver and gold. The boat is mounted to a black stone base inscribed on top, "A RONALD REAGAN PRESIDENTE STATI UNITI D'AMERICA" and on the side, "REGIONE LIGURIA." Also included with the gift is a blue fabric wrapped box for storing the boat in.Box: 14 1/4 × 8 1/2 × 4 1/2 in. (36.2 × 21.6 × 11.4 cm)
Historical NoteThe sculpture was given by Rinaldo Magnani, the President of the Liguria Regional Government in Italy, when he was in Washington, DC to attend the 1985 Columbus Film Festival, which was held at the Kennedy Center. He gave President Ronald Reagan the model of one of Christopher Columbus’s three ships. Columbus, though sailing on his expedition with the support of the Spanish crown, was from the city of Genoa, in the then-Republic of Genoa. Today Genoa is the capital of Liguria.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and was on display in the White House until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
