Physical DescriptionA bronze sculpture of Abraham Lincoln in a standing pose holding broken chains in both his hands. The right hand is clenched and raised up to his chest, and the left arm hangs at his side. The sculpture is mounted on a green marble base with gold lettering in Spanish: “Amigo de los Mexicanos y luchador insobornable por la libertad,” which translates to “Friend of the Mexicans and unceasing fighter for liberty.” Made by “Hicicza O.” in 1977. Also included is a black fabric-covered cabinet with hinged doors made to contain the sculpture.Case: 30 1/2 × 13 × 12 in. (77.5 × 33 × 30.5 cm)
Historical NoteBronze sculpture of Abraham Lincoln with broken chains by Humberto Peraza Ojeda. It's lettered "AMIGO DE LOS MEXICANOS Y LUCHADOR INSOBORNABLE POR LA LIBERTAD" (FRIEND OF THE MEXICANS AND UNCEASING FIGHTER FOR LIBERTY). It was given during a meeting at Camp David June 8, 1981 and was on display in the White House, West Wing Study. President Reagan wrote in his diary, "Pres. L.P. & exchanged gifts. And as usual he topped me a beautiful western sculpture, a magnificent book & the model of the Lincoln statue hes had erected in Tia Juana [Tijuana]."
President Reagan wrote in his diary June 8, 1981, "That evening an outdoor BBQ with music by a Navy combo & then entertainment by Janie Fickey a country music star. Pres. L.P. & I exchanged gifts. And as usual he topped me with a beautiful western sculpture, a magnificent book & the model of the Lincoln statue he's had erected in Tia Juana [Tijuana]."

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
