Physical DescriptionThis is an oval-shaped brass belt buckle with a scrimshaw inset of an image depicting Chief Illiniwek. Chief Illiniwek is wearing traditional Native American clothing with a feathered headdress and is depicted in a dancing pose. Stamped into the back of the buckle is text stating, "SOLID BRASS BTS MADE IN U.S.A."
Historical NoteChief Illiniwek was the mascot of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 1926-2007, named after the Illinois Confederation or Illiniwek. Chief AJ visited the White House on October 3, 1983.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
