Physical DescriptionA wooden yaoure mask. The mask features a human face with 3 points down each side of the face and a goatee broken up into 3 sections. The hair of the mask appears to be pinned back. The mask comes with a lucite stand for display.
Historical NoteYaoure mask, made of wood. It is from the Bouaké area of Côte d'Ivoire. Yaoure masks represent Yu spirits, and are in the shape of human elongated faces with a protruding mouth and pierced semi-circular eyes set under a high forehead and an elaborate plaited hairstyle. This mask was given during the state visit of Félix Houphouët-Boigny and his wife June 7, 1983.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
