Physical DescriptionA gold-toned cast metal bust (.01a) of Marcus Procious Cato on a white marble base. On the front of the base is a gold-toned engraved plate stating "CATONE D'ORO, H. R. REAGAN, PRESIDENTE, USA, MONTE PORZIO CATONE." The bust is inside of a red leather case (.01b).Historical NoteMarcus Porcius Cato (234-149 BC), better known as Cato the Elder, was a Roman Senator and historian. Monte Porzio Catone is a municipality of Rome which is named after the Cato family. The bust was an inaugural gift to President Reagan from the mayor of Rome.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
