Physical DescriptionThis is a model of the “Norfolk” submarine mounted on a wood base with its plastic vitrine. On the base is an engraved plaque reading, “President Ronald W. Reagan, USS Norfolk SSN 714 Launched October 31, 1981 Newport News Shipbuilding.”
Historical NoteThe USS Norfolk (SSN-714), a Los Angeles-class attack submarine, was laid down on August 1, 1979, launched on October 31, 1981, and commissioned on May 21, 1983. She was sponsored by Rebecca Jane Weinberger, author and wife of Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. The sub was the third US Navy vessel to be named for Norfolk, VA. She served in the fleet until 2014, and was decommissioned on December 11, 2014 at her homeport of Naval Station Norfolk.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
