Physical DescriptionA sepia-toned print of a male elephant with a green mat in a gold-colored wooden frame by Terry Russell. The elephant is Bud from the Columbus, Ohio, Zoo. The inscription on the bottom of the print reads "40/250, Terry Russell, Plate I." On the back of the frame is an attached article about Terry Russell stating, "The artist Terry Russell Wildlife and pet portrait artist Terry Russell, believes that each animal, both domestic and wild, exhibits a unique personality and expression. This has challenged her to capture each expression at its peak. By shooting all of her own reference work, Terry is able to 'meet' each animal and study its behavior. This, and the artist's technique of building each painting up in layers brings a sense of realism to her artwork. Terry's background in art beginning at Virginia Intermont College, dealt mostly with abstract, impressionistic work. Her natural interest in animals led to her decision to give up a career in fashion and devote full time to painting the subjects she enjoys most - animals. She feels her education in abstract work has helped her give special consideration to the texture and design of animal fur and feathers. Commissioned work includes pet portraits or wildlife in oil, watercolor and pastel. Each year Terry publishes a Pet Portrait Calendar containing current work. These are available in many local gift shops and through the artist. Terry is the feature artist at the Gift Barn at the Columbus Zoo. She has spent many hours studying the animals at the zoo and offers for sale, full color limited edition wildlife prints. These prints, from original oil paintings, include 'Black Magic', the male black leopard and 'Hidden in Brush' of the male jaguar. They are portrayed in a natural setting. The artist's work is displayed at the Carrousel Galley, Columbus, Ohio; Winter-Del Gallery, Delaware, Ohio; Aimmer Gallery, Dublin, Ohio; and Gift Barn at the Columbus Zoo."Historical NoteBud the Elephant, also known as Cosi, was an African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) who lived at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio for nineteen years, before passing away in 1991.
