Historical NoteThe plate was presented to First Lady Nancy Reagan during a visit to the Beijing Zoo April 27, 1984 during a trip to the Peoples Republic of China. In March 1984, she was the honorary national chairwoman of a campaign which asked children in America to donate their "Pennies for Pandas" to raise money to help starving pandas in the wild. While she was at the zoo, she brought a check for the amount donated. Mrs. Reagan was also able to feed a baby panda bear.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
