Physical DescriptionA reproduction of a 15th-century white porcelain vase, the design depicts an orchid motif with Chinese characters meaning "source of fragrance" on one side and a Korean inscription on the reverse, which translates as "To His Excellency President Ronald Reagan From President of the Republic of Korea Chun Doo Hwan. February 2, 1981." The vase was made by Mr. Shin Sang-ho, hand-painted by Mr. Chang Woo-Soung, and inscribed personally by President Chun.
Historical NoteThis white porcelain flower vase is a reproduction of a 15th c. Yi Dynasty design. It was given as a birthday gift to President Ronald Reagan during the State visit of President Chun February 1-3, 1981. While he was in the US, President Chun presented a significant contribution to the Smithsonian Institution on behalf of the Korean people for the construction of a Museum of Eastern Art on the Mall in Washington to enhance inter-cultural understanding and appreciation between the people of America and the peoples of Asia.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
