Historical NoteThe Panda family--mother, father, and baby--were a gift from the Gift of the Students of Shanghai Children's Palace following Mrs. Reagan’s visit in April of 1984. Visiting with over 700 children, Mrs. Reagan watched a performance by the center’s Little Ambassadors, a group of 27 musicians and dancers, as well as a puppet show. The Shanghai Children’s Palace, originally built by Song Qingling in 1953, is a place where children from the ages of 5-14 can study calligraphy, dancing, and the arts.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
