Physical DescriptionA 1931 Latvia coin that is .835 silver. Depicted on the obverse is a maiden (Liberty) head facing right in stylized folk costume, including headdress, with ears of grain over her shoulder, lettered LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA [Republic of Latvia]. On the reverse is the Coat of Arms of Latvia with supporters above denomination and date "Piece 5 Lati."Historical NotePeteis Stokmanis, a Latvian dissident, sent this coin to a man in New York in 1981 to send on to President Reagan. It is a Latvian silver coin, ‘5 lati,’ and dates to 1931.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
