Physical DescriptionA color photograph of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sophia of Spain looking off in the distance, with grass and trees in the background. The King is wearing a dark blue suit, a dark blue tie with a red rectangular design, and a white shirt. The Queen is wearing a tan dress with a white sprig design, a button, a pleated bodice, a bow at the neck, gathered sleeves, and gold jewelry. There is a large white border on three sides, and the bottom is inscribed in Spanish “A Nancy y Ronald Reagan con el [illegible] Juan Carlos R 1985 Sofoa R.” Verso is blank.
Historical NoteIn May of 1985, President Reagan and Nancy Reagan attended an economic summit in Bonn, Germany and made state visits to Germany, Spain, and Portugal. They were in Madrid from May 5- May 8, where President Reagan met with community Leaders and Prime Minister Felipe González, and they attended a State Dinner at the Royal Palace in Madrid with King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sophia. Their Majesties gave several gifts on that trip, including at a private dinner with King Juan Carlos, Queen Sophia, Princess Elena, and Princess Cristina at the Zarzuela Palace on May 6.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
