Physical DescriptionA ceremonial sumo apron, also known as “Kesho-Mawashi.” The apron is made of heavy silk and gold and depicts an image of Mt. Fuji painted by master artist Dogyu Okumura. Attached to the bottom of the apron are heavy gold tassels.
Historical NoteA traditional ceremonial belt worn by top sumo wrestlers during their ring entering ceremony, the piece is made of gold cloth and depicts a scene of Mt. Fuji painted by Master Artist Dogyu Okumura. It is 20 feet long and is one-of-a-kind.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
