Physical DescriptionA bronze sculpture of John Wayne mounted on a black marble base with a metal plaque. The sculpture is titled “Red River” and features a standing John Wayne in western attire. The belt buckle is a replica of the one the Reagans gave to John Wayne. It is number 1 out of a limited edition of 500 made by Jessie Corsaut.
Historical NoteIt was presented to First Lady Nancy Reagan at a black tie awards dinner during her Los Angeles trip November 13-16, 1981. The Scopus Awards were held on November 15, 1981. Frank Sinatra, Edie Gorme, Steve Lawrence, Kenny Rogers, Gregory Peck, Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Peter McCoy were also in attendance. The National Scopus Award is the highest honor given by the American Friends of the Hebrew University. It was named for Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. 1981 recepients include Nancy Reagan, David Rose, Burton Joseph, Jill & Leon Uris, Edward Kennedy, Edward Bronfman, Dianne Feinstein, and Betty Ford.
During the Reagan Administration it was on display in the White House Billiard Room.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and was on display in the White House Billiard Room until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
