Physical DescriptionThis is a bronze equestrian statue of Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury wearing a wide-brimmed hat, high-collared cape, and gaiters. His feet are in the stirrups, and he holds a Bible to his chest with his proper right hand, a finger marking a place in it. He holds the reins in his proper left hand. The horse's head is turned to the proper left, and its tail is swishing. The sculpture is on an oval polished wooden base.
Historical NoteAn equestrian sculpture of Francis Asbury (1745-1816) by Everette Wyatt. Asbury was one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States, arriving in October 1771. He traveled all across the nation on horseback to minister to those living on the frontier. Asbury College (now University) was named after him. The sculpture was presented in the Oval Office during Congressional Time on August 9, 1982.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
