Physical DescriptionA framed text of the presentation of the Robert F. Kennedy Medal with the Remarks of President Ronald Reagan and the Remarks of Senator Edward Kennedy. It is lettered "The Presentation of the ROBERT F. KENNEDY MEDAL The Rose Garden, The White House June 5, 1981" and has images of the obverse and the reverse of the RFK gold medal. It is inscribed by Sen. Ted Kennedy in black ink in the lower left corner, "For President Reagan and Nancy with Personal Gratitude and with Respect, For You Truly Do Understand That the Common Love of Our Country Transcends All Partisan Difference. Ted Kennedy, Christmas 1981." The frame is made of a gold-toned metal with glass.Historical NoteOn June 6, 1981, President Ronald Reagan presented Ethel Kennedy with a Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Robert F. Kennedy. The medal was authorized by the 95th Congress on November 1, 1978, but never presented. President Ronald Reagan and Sen. Ted Kennedy spoke at the presentation ceremony, which was held in the Rose Garden at the White House. Sen. Kennedy had their remarks wriiten up and given to President Reagan as a Christmas gift in 1982. When he thanked President Reagan for the honor, Sen. Kennedy said "And it is appropriate that he should receive it from you, for he understood so well that the common love of our country transcends all party identification and all partisan difference."

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
