Physical DescriptionA terracotta relief depicting winged Victoria, the ancient Roman goddess of victory, and an acanthus bush. The relief was broken into seven pieces but repaired.Historical NoteUnlike hand carved stone friezes, clay images were made from molds and then fired and painted. This terracotta relief dates from the age of the Roman Emperor Augustus, who reigned from January 16, 27 BC to August 19, 14 AD. It depicts winged Victoria, the ancient Roman goddess of victory, and an acanthus bush. It was part of the Gorga Collection in Rome before it was given to President Reagan by Italian President Alessandro Pertini during a state visit on March 25, 1982.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
