Attached to the head of the gavel is a metal plaque with the Seal of the President of the United States and text stating "Original White House Material Removed in 1950."Historical NotePresident Harry S. Truman oversaw a major renovation and expansion of the White House from 1948-1952. The Trumans lived across the street in the Blair House for three years while the White House was gutted, leaving the original exterior walls.Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Ronald Reagan during the Reagan administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President Office of Correspondence and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January, 1989 for deposit with the Reagan Presidential Library.
